Eighteenth Hole Decided Winners

Stanwood, WA - The Golf Channel Amateur Tour of Seattle made its way north for The Competition at Kayak Point.  Players were challenged by the tight, sloping fairways.  But the slants on the green were the true test of the day.  With such close competition this week, many winners were determined on the eighteenth hole. 

Championship Flight (0-3.9) – The Championship Flight was led by Don Foy, of Burien, WA.  Don shot an 88 to take home his first victory of the season. 

Palmer Flight (4.0-7.9) – The Palmer Flight had Daniel Zeiler in the lead after nine hole, shooting a 39 on the front, and Mike Joaquin was two-shots back.  But Kevin Turner, of Palm Coast, FL, made a charge on the back, birding 3 of his first four holes.  Daniel had a one-shot lead going into eighteen, but Kevin made a par and was able to edge inside of Daniel by one stroke.  Kevin shot an 80 to become champion and get his first win of the season. 

                                                                            

Hogan Flight (8.0-11.9) – The Hogan Flight was the most exciting of the day, with Kim Shek, of Bellevue, WA shooting an impressive 38 on the front.  She had only a one-shot lead over Mike Knox, and several others just on their heels.  One of those players was Brian Wimer, of Lake Stevens, WA, who managed to go two-under on his next three holes, and catch Kim.  The players remained steady over their next few holes, letting it all come down to the eighteenth hole, with Kim and Brian tied in the led, and Jerry Browning only one-shot back.  Brian was able to make a sandy par, putting the pressure on Kim to make her putt.  Unfortunately Kim missed, and Brian shot a 77 to become champion.  This was Brian’s second victory in a row.  Kim finished in 2^nd place with a round of 78.  Jerry shot 79 to take 3^rd place.  And Cindy Merritt and Heath Reeves finished tied in 4^th place, with rounds of 80.   

Sarazen Flight (12.0-15.9) – The Sarazen Flight was dominated this week by Don Harrell, of Everett, WA.  Don was one-over par on the front nine with a three-shot lead over Ryan Meyer.  Don continued to impress on the back, showing off his putting skills.  He shot the low round of the day, with a 75, and got his second victory of the season.  Ryan finished in 2^nd place with a score of 85. 

Jones Flight (16.0-19.9) – The Jones Flight was another close battle, with Tanka Sunuwar, of Sammamish, WA shooting a 42 on the front.  Tanka had a four shot lead on the field, but with a challenging back, several players tried to close the gap.  Glenn Niemela was able to make up several shots on the field, shooting 41 on the back, and Jim Fisher continued his steady round to move up the leader board. But despite the charge, Tanka was able to hold on to his lead by one stroke, shooting a 94.  This was Tanka’s first win on Tour.  Glenn and Jim finished tied for 2^nd place, shooting rounds of 95. 

Snead Flight (20.0 +) – The Snead Flight was a close race, as Carl Pridgen led the front shooting a 46.  Jack Plummer was only one-shot back, and Jennifer Forsythe was two.  With the back nine playing tough, all players came to the eighteenth hole tied.  But Carl was able to win the hole, shooting a round of 94 to become champion.  This was Carl’s first win on Tour.

Players Skills Were Tested at Chambers Bay

University Place, WA -  The Golf Channel Amateur Tour of Seattle returned for the 2012 Pacific Northwest Preview, at Chambers Bay.  Once again the course proved to be challenging for players of all skills, as players not only battled the course, but rain and wind throughout the day.  The finishing stretch of the course allowed the wind to dominate, and players had to fight for each shot.  While no defending champion was able to repeat their 2011 victory, several players won for their first time in the 2012 Season. 

  

Championship Flight (0-3.9) – The Championship Flight was lead by Warren Ayers, of Chehalis, WA, who made the turn even par, and a three-shot lead over Paul Cooke.  As the wind and rain picked up on the back nine, players struggled to fight the weather.  Warren continued to control the field and shot the low round of the day with a 76.  This was Warren’s second win on Tour.  2^nd place was taken by Nate Strand, who made up ground on the back nine, and shot an 81. 

Palmer Flight (4.0-7.9) – The players battled on the front nine in the Palmer Flight, with Ray Henry and Alex Cogdall making the turn two-over par, and Chris Girouard only two-shots back.  As the players faced strong winds on the back, Alex was able to make birdies on #12 and #18 to finish with a two-shot lead.  He became champion with a round of 77, and Ray took 2^nd place with a 79.  Chris also stayed steady on the back, and shot an 81 to take 3^rd place. 

Hogan Flight (8.0-11.9) – The Hogan Flight was a close race, as five players were tied at the turn after shooting 42.  As the back side pushed players to separate themselves from the pack, Brian Wimer and Paul Goff were able to shine, including an eagle on Hole 12 from Paul.  Ultimately each player shot an 80 to tie.  It took four holes in the sudden death playoff, but Brian ultimately won the match, and received his first win on Tour.  Paul finished in 2^nd place.  Kevin Davis shot an 83 to take 3^rd place.  And Mike Knox’s impressive back nine allowed him to tie for 4^th place with Heath Reeves. 

  

Senior Hogan Flight (8.0-11.9) – The Senior Hogan Flight was led by the 2011 Defending Champion, Daniel Wiggins after nine, who shot a 38 on the front.  He had a two-shot lead over Jim Howie, and three-shots over Mitch Cohan.  But Daniel struggled on the back nine, and Jim was able to overtake, shooting a great round of 78 to become champion.  This was Jim’s first win in the 2012 season.  Mitch was able to hold on by one shot over Linda Selegue, shooting a round of 83 to take 2^nd place. 

Sarazen Flight (12.0-15.9) – The Sarazen flight had Frank Rohrschneider and Jordan Cumming making the turn in the lead with 42’s on the front.  Several players were on their heels, but Frank’s determination and consistency kept him ahead of everyone.  Shooting a round of 83, Frank took home his first win in the Sarazen Flight.  Kathy Provazek shot an 86 to take 2^nd place, and right behind was Ryan Meyer, who took 3^rd place with an 87. 

Senior Sarazen Flight (12.0-15.9) – David Landry led the Senior Sarazen Flight after nine holes, with a 40 on the front.  With the rest of the flight in striking distance, it came down to the back.  Veteran player, Eric Bennett, of Tacoma, WA, made his move on Hole 12 with a birdie, but it wasn’t quite enough to pull ahead.  Both David and Eric finished tied with rounds of 82.  Unfortunately David was not able to stick around for a playoff, so Eric took home this week’s trophy, giving David 2^nd place.  

Jones Flight (16.0-19.9) – The Jones Flight had Michael Olson leading with a 40 on the front nine, and only one-shot ahead of Michael Wyatt.  As scores drastically went up on the back, Michael was able to hold on to his lead, and shot an 85 to become champion.  Brian McBride was able to make up ground on the back, and finished in 2^nd place with a 91.    

Senior Jones Flight (16.0-19.9) – The 2011 Defending Champion, Thomas Dougherty, led the charge on the front for the Senior Jones Flight, with a 43.  But Randy Droppert, of Tacoma, WA was only two-shots back, and managed to fight on the back, shooting a round of 94 to become champion.  This was Randy’s first win on Tour.  Hank La Luz Jr. also made a big comeback on the back nine, finishing with a 95 to take 2^nd place.    

Snead Flight (20.0 +) – Lisa Scott, of Issaquah, WA, dominated the Snead Flight, shooting an impressive 38 on the front nine.  While Lisa struggled a bit on the back, she was able to hold on to her lead, and shot a round of 87 to become champion.  This was Lisa’s first win on Tour.  While Jennifer Forsythe trialed Lisa on the front, she also had a good lead on the rest of the field after the turn, but Robert Giedt tried to make a charge on the back.  Jennifer was able to beat Robert by one, shooting a round of 90 to take 2^nd place.
